STILL/STILLNESS
(Silent, Silence, Quiet, Quietness)

I.     STILL/STILLNESS

HEBREW: demamah=silence, calm

                        menuchah=rest, place of rest

                        damam=to be silent, cease, stand still

                        raphah=to cause to fall, let go

                       

1.   I Kings 19:12 “And after the fire a still(demamah)small voice.”

2.   Psalms 4:4 “Stand in awe and sin not: commune with your own heart upon

your bed, and be still(damam).”

3.   Psalms 23:2 “He leadeth me beside the still(menuchah) waters.”

4.   Psalms 46:10 “Be still(raphah), and know that I am God.”

 

GREEK: phimoo=to muzzle, gag

 

1.   Mark 4:39 “And Jesus said unto the sea, Peace, be still(phimoo).  And the 

    wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”

 

II. QUIET/QUIETNESS

HEBREW: damam=to be silent, to cease, stand still

                        shaan=to be quiet, at ease, secure

                        shathaq=to cease, be quiet, calm

                        nachath=descent, rest quietness

                        shaqat=to cause to be quiet or at rest

 

1.   Job 34:29 “When He giveth quietness(shaqat), who then can make

       trouble?  And when He hideth his face, who then can behold

       him?  Whether it be done against a nation, or against a man

       only.”

2.   Psalms 107:28-30 “Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he

bringeth them out of their distresses.  He maketh the

storm a calm, so that the wavs thereof are still.  Then are

they glad because they be quiet(shathaq=to cease, be

quiet, calm); so he bringeth them unto their desired

haven.”

3.   Psalms 131:2 “Surely I have behaved and quieted(damam) myself, as a

        child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a

        weaned child.”

2.   Proverbs 1:33 “But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall

be quiet(shaan) from fear of evil.”

3.   Ecclesiastes 4:6 “Better is an handful with quietness(nachath=descent,

       rest, quietness), than both the hands full with travail and

       vexation of spirit.”

4.   Isaiah 30:15 “For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In

 returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness(shaqat) and

 in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.”

5.   Isaiah 32:17 “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect

 of righteousness quietness(shaqat) and assurance for ever.”

6.   Jeremiah 30:10 “Therefore fear thou not, o my servant Jacob, saith the

 Lord; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee

from afar, and thy seed form the land of their captivity: and

Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet(shaan),

and none shall make him afraid.”

 

GREEK: eremos=quiet

                  hesuchios=mild, tranquil, gentle

                  hesuchazo=to rest, keep quiet

                  hesuchia=quietness, silence

 

1.   I Thessalonians 4:11 “And that ye study to be quiet(hesuchazo), and to do

     your own business, and to work with our own hands,

     as we commanded you;”

2.   II Thessalonians 3:11-12 “For we hear that there are some which walk

            among you disorderly, working not at all, but are

            busybodies.  Now them that are such we

            command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ,

            that with quietness(hesuchia) they work, and eat

            their own bread.”

3.   I Timothy 2:1-2 “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications,

  prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for

  all men; for kings and for all that are in authority; that we

  may lead a quiet(eremos) and peaceable life in all

  godliness and honesty.”

4.  I Peter 3:4 “But let it be  the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not

   corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet

   spirit(hesuchios), which is in the sight of God of great price.”

 

III. SILENT/SILENCE

HEBREW: dememah=silence, calm

                        hasah=to be or keep silent

                        cashah=to be silent

                        damam=to become silent, cease, stand still

1.   Job 4:15-16 “Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh

      stood up: It stood still, but I count not discern the form

     thereof: an image was before mine eyes. There was

     silence(demeah), and I heard a voice.”

2.   Isaiah 41:1Keep silence(hasah) before me, O islands; and let the people

renew their strength: let them come near; than let them speak:

let us come near together to judgment.”

3.   Jeremiah 8:14 “Why do we sit still?  Assemble yourselves, and let us enter

     into the defenced cities, and let us be silent(damam) there:

     for the Lord our God hath put us to silence, and given us

     water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the

     Lord.”

4.   Habakkuk 2:20 “But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep

  silence(cashah) before him.”

5.   Zechariah 2:13Be silent(damam), O all flesh, before the Lord: for he is

 raised up out of the holy habitation.”

 

GREEK: sigao=to be silent, quiet

1.   I Corinthians 14:28 “But if there be no interpreter, let him keep

silence(sigao) in the church; and let him speak to

himself and to God.”
