SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TEMPLE

AS A PICTURE OR TYPE

OLD TESTAMENT PERSPECTIVE: (Picture or type) God dwelling with and desiring fellowship with His People!

 

1.      Adam & Eve:

(Genesis 3:8)“And they heard(Hebrew shamea meaning to hear)the

voice(Hebrew gol meaning a voice, a sound)of the Lord God(Lord, Hebrew

yahweh meaning one who is; God, Hebrew elohim meaning God, object of

worship)walking(Hebrew halak meaning to go on habitually, or up and

down)in the garden(gan)in the cool(Hebrew ruach meaning wind)of the

day(Hebrew yom meaning day)..the presence(Hebrew panim meaning face

or countenance)of the Lord God(Hebrew for Lord, yahweh  meaning one

who is; Hebrew for God, elohim meaning God, object of worship).”

 

2.      Enoch:

(Genesis 5:22) “Enoch(Hebrew for teacher; A son of Jared a descendant of

Seth)walked(Hebrew halak meaning to go on habitually or up an down)

with God(Hebrew elohim meaning God, object of worship): and he was

not(Hebrew meaning literally not he; taken up, translated); for

God(Hebrew elohim meaning God, object of worship) took(Hebrew laqach

meaning to take, receive)him.”

(Hebrews 11:5) “By faith(Greek pistis meaning trust, faithfulness,

steadfastness)Enoch(Greek for teacher; a son of Jared a descendant of

Seth) was translated(Greek metatithemi meaning to transpose,

translate)that he should not see death(Greek thanatos meaning death); and

was not found(Greek me meaning not), because God(Greek theos meaning

God, object of worship)had translated(Greek metatithemi meaning to

transpose, translate)him: for before his translation(same as above)he had

this testimony(Greek martureo meaning to bear witness), that he

pleased(Greek euaresteo meaning to please well) God(Greek theos

meaning God, object of worship).”

 

3.      Noah:

(Genesis 6:8-9, 22) “Noah(Hebrew noe meaning rest; Son of Lamech and

father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth)found(Hebrew matsa meaning to

find)grace(Hebrew chen meaning favor) in the eyes(Hebrew ayn meaning

the eye)of the Lord(Hebrew yahweh meaning He who is).  Noah(Same as

above)was a just man(Hebrew tsaddiq meaning righteous)and

perfect(Hebrew tamim meaning whole, complete)in his

generations(Hebrew dor meaning generation, circle), and Noah(Same as

above)walked(Hebrew halak meaning to go on habitually or up and down)

with God(Hebrew elohim meaning God, object of worship).  Noah(same as

above) did according to all that God(same as above)commanded(Hebrew

tsawah meaning to set up a precept)him, so did he.”

(Hebrews 11:7) “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as

yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the

which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness

which is by faith.”

(I Peter 3:20) “The long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while

the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by

water.

(II Peter 2:5) “God spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth

person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world

of the ungodly:”

 

 

4.      Abraham:(Genesis 12:1; 15:6; 17:1; 22:12“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And Abram believed in the Lord; and God counted it to him for righteousness.  The Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.  Abraham, I knowest that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not witheld thy son, thine only son from me.”

(Hebrews 11:8) “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a

place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he

went out, not knowing whither he went.”

(Hebrews 11:10) “For by faith Abraham looked for a city which hath

foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

(Hebrews 11:16) “But now they desire a better country, that is an

heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he

hath prepared for them a city.

 

 

5.      Moses:

(Exodus 33:11) “And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man

spreaketh to his friend.”

 

6.      Tabernacle of Moses:

7.      David:

(Psalms 17:8)“Keep me as the apple of the eye.”

(Acts 13:22)”I have found David, a man after mine own heart, which shall

fulfill all my will.”

(I Samuel 16:13) “ The Samule took the horn of oil, and anointed David in

the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the Lord came upon David

from that day forward.”

 

8.      Tabernacle of David:

(II Samuel 6:17 “And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his

place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and

David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.”

(Acts 15:15-16) “And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is

written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of

David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I

will set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all

the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord who doeth all these things.”

 

9.      Temple of Solomon(Dedicated 1004 BC):

(II Chronicles 5:13) “The house was filled with a cloud, even the house of

the Lord; so that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the

cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.”

 

10.  Temple of Zerubbabel(Dedicated 516 BC):

(Haggai 1:14) “And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son

of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of

Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people;

and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts, their God.”

 

11.  Temple of Herod(Built 37-4 BC):

Jossephus and the Talmud are the primary sources of information concerning this temple.

12.  NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT: God dwelling in man fulfilling His desire to fellowship with His people.

13.  Jesus: (Luke 2:22-24, 27) “And when the days of Mary’s purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought Jesus to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord…and Simeon came by the Spirit into the temple…”

14.  Jesus: (Luke 2:42, 46) “And when Jesus was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast…and it came to pass, that after three days they found him the temple…”

15.  Jesus: (Matthew 4:5-7) “Then the devil taketh Jesus up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of god, cast thyself down; for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.  Jesus said unto him, It is written saying, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”

16.  Jesus: (Mark 14:49) I was daily with you I the temple teaching…”

17.  Jesus: (Matthew 21:12) “And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seat of them that sold doves, and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”

18.  Jesus: (Matthew 24:1) “And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.  And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

19.  Disciples: (Luke 24:52-53) “And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.”

20.  Jesus: (John 4:20-24) “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.  Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.  But the hour cometh, and how is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.  God is Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

21.  Jesus: (John 14:17) “For the Spirit dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

22.  Jesus: (Matthew 27:50-51) “Jesus, when he had cried again with aloud voice, yielded up the ghost.  And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;)”

23.  Disciples: (Acts 2:46) “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people.  And the Lord add to the church daily such as should be saved.”

24.  Disciples: (Acts 3:1) “Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the our of prayer.”

25.  Disciple: (Acts 5:20) “Angel said to the apostles: Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.”

26.  Disciples: (Acts 5:42) “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”

27.  Disciples: (Acts 7:48) “Stephen: Howbeit the most High dwell not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?  Hath not my hand made all these things?”

28.  Disciples: (Acts 21:26) “The Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering should be offered for every on of them.”

29.   Disciples: (Acts 25:8) “Paul: Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.”

30.  Disciples: (Acts 17:24) “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;”

31.  Disciples:

(I Corinthians 3:16-17)“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?  If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”

(I Corinthians 6:19) “What? Knew ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

32.  Disciples: (II Corinthians 6:16) “For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

33.  Disciples: (Ephesians 2:19-22) “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”

34.  Historical: AD 69-70 Roman armies of Titus completely destroyed the temple as prophesied by Jesus.

35.  Revelation: (Revelation 21:22) “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.”
