DISCIPLE

Greek: mathano meaning to learn, to be appraised of, to increase one’s knowledge; mathetes meaning a learner, a pupil, one who follows the teaching of someone else, taught or trained one, disciplined one.

1.   Matthew 5:1f “And seeing the multitudes, Jesus went up into a mountain;

         and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he

         opened his mouth, and taught them, saying…”

2.   Matthew 8:19-21 “And a certain scribe came, and said unto Jesus,

    Master(didaskalos=teacher), I will follow thee

    whithersoever thou goest.  And Jesus saith unto him, The

    foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but

    the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.  And

    another of his disciples said unto him, Lord suffer me

    first to go and bury my father.  But Jesus said unto him,

    Follow me; and let the dead bury the dead.”

3.   Matthew 9:9-10 “And as Jesus passed forth from thence he saw a man,

   named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he

   saith  unto him, Follow me.  And he arose, and followed

   him.  And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the

   house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat

   down with him and his disciples.”

4.   Matthew 10:1-2 “And when Jesus had called unto him his twelve disciples,

  he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them

  out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of

  disease.  Now the names of the twelve apostles are Simon

  Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,

  Thomas, Matthew, James, Thaddaeus, Simon the

  Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot.”

5.   Mark 4:34 “But without a parable spake Jesus not unto them(multitudes):

                           and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his

   disciples.”

6.   Mark 8:34 “And when Jesus had called the people unto him with is

   disciples also, he said unto them, Whoever will come after me,

   let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.”

8.   Luke 6:12-13 “And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus went out into a

                                mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.                                And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of

        them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;”

9.   Luke 6:17 “And Jesus came down with them, and stood in the plain, and

   the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people .”

10.  Luke 14:25-33 “And there went great multitudes with Jesus: and he

 turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and

hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and

brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot

be my disciple.  And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and

come after me, cannot be my disciple.  So likewise,

whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath,

he cannot be my disciple.”

11.  Luke 19:37 “And when Jesus was come nigh, even now at the descent of

      the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples

      began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the

      mighty works that they had seen;”

12. John 6:65-69 “And Jesus said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can

         come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 

         From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked

         no more with him.  Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye

        also go away?  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to

        whom shall we go?  Thou hast the words of eternal.  And we

        believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the

        living God.

13. John 8:31 “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye

    continue in many word, then are ye my disciples indeed: And

    ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

14. John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one

 another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 

 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye

 have love one to another.”

15. John 15:8 “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so

    shall ye be my disciples.”

16. John 19:38-39 “And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of

 Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews.  And there came

 also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night.”

17. Acts 1:15 “And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples,

   and said,(the number of names together were about an hundred

   and twenty,)

18. Acts 6:1 “And in those days, when the number of the disciples was

multiplied,”

19. Acts 6:7 “And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples

 multiplied in Jerusalem greatly:”

20. Acts 9:26-27 “And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join

   himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and

   believed not that he was a disciple.  But Barnabas took him, and

   brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he

   had seen the Lord in the way, and that He had spoken unto him,

   and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of

   Jesus.”

21. Acts 11:26 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.”

22. Acts 19:9 “But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake

   evil of that way before the multitude, Paul departed form them,

   and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one

   Tyrannus.”
