CORINTHIANS 14:1-40
14:1
“Follow(dioko=to pursue) after love(agape), and desire(zeloo=to
be
zealous) spiritual(pneumatikos=spiritual)gifts(charisma),
but
rather(mallon=more) that ye
may prophesy(propheteia=a
proclamation or prediction made under the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit).”
14:2
“For he that speaketh(laleo=talk, tell) in an unknown
tongue(glosa=
language) speaketh(laleo=talk, tell) not unto men(belonging to
man,
humanity), but unto God(theos: god, object of worship) for no man
understandeth(eido=be acquainted) him; howbeit in the spirit
(pneuma=spirit) he speaketh(laleo=to talk, tell) mysteries
(musterion=what is known only to the initiated).”
14:3
“But he that prophesieth(propheteia=a proclamation or prediction
made
under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) speaketh(laleo=to talk, tell)
unto men(belonging to man or humanity) to edification (oikodome=
building up), and exhortation (paraklesis = a calling near or for), and
comfort (paramuthia = consolation, solace).”
14:4
“He that speaketh(laleo=talk, tell) in an unknown
tongue (glosa=
language) edifieth(oikdomeo=to build up) himself; but he that
prophesieth(propheteia = a proclamation or prediction made under the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit) edifieth(oikdomeo=to build up) the
church(ekklesia=called out ones).”
14:5
“I would that ye all spake(laleo=talk, tell) with tongues(glosa=language),
but (mallon=more) that ye prophesied(propheteia=a proclamation or
prediction made under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit): for
greater(meizon=greater) is he that prophesieth(propheteia=a
proclamation or prediction made under the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit)than the that speaketh(laleo=talk, tell) with tongues(glosa=
language), except(ean me=if not)he interpret(hermeneuo=explain
thoroughly), that the church(ekklesia=called out ones) may
receive(lambano=to receive, take) edifying(oikodome=building
up).”
14:6
“Now, brethren(adelphoi=brethren), if I come unto you speaking(laleo=
talk, tell) with tongues(glosa=language), what shall I profit(opheleo=to
profit) you, except I shall speak(laleo=talk, tell) to you either by
revelation(apokalupsis=an uncovering), or by knowledge(gnosis=
knowledge), or by prophesying(propheteia=a proclamation or
prediction made under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit), or by
doctrine(didache=the act of teaching)?”
14:7
“And even things without life giving(ta apsucha=the things
without
breath) sound(phthoggos=a sound), whether pipe(auleo=flute) or
harp(kithara=harp), except they give a distinction(a sending forth
diversely) in the sounds(phthoggos=a sound), how shall it be known
(ginosko=to know) what is piped(auleo=to play on a flute) or harped
(kitharizo=to use a harp)?”
14:8
“For if the trumpet (salpigx=trumpet) give an uncertain(adelos=not
manifest) sound(phthoggos=a sound), who shall prepare(paraskeuazo=
to make ready for) himself to the battle(polemos=fight)?”
14:9
“So likewise ye, except ye utter(didomi=to give) by the tongue
(glosa=
language) words(logos=word) easy to be understood(eusemos= easily
noted)), how shall it be known(ginosko=to know) what is spoken(laleo=
to talk, tell)? For ye shall speak(laleo=to
talk, tell)into the
air(aer=atmosphere).”
14:10
“There are, it may be, so many kinds(genos=species) of voices(phone=
sound) in the world(kosmos=arrangement), and none(oudeis=not even
one) of them is without signification(aphonos=without sound or sense).”
14:11
“Therefore if I know(oida=to see) not the meaning(dunamis=power)
of
the voice(phone=sound), I shall be unto him that speaketh(laleo=to
talk,
tell) a barbarian(barbaros=foreigner, alien), and he that speaketh(laleo
=to talk, tell) shall be a barbarian(barbaros=foreigner, alien) unto
me.”
14:12
“Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous(zelotes=a zealot) of
spiritual(pneumatikos=spiritual) gifts,
seek(zeteo=desire) that ye
may excel(perisseuo=to be over and above) to the edifying(oikodome=
building up) of the church(ekklesia=called out ones).”
14:13
“Wherefore let him that speaketh(laleo=to talk, tell) in an unknown
tongue(glosa=language) pray(proseuchomai=to pray for) that he may
interpret((to explain thoroughly).”
14:14
“For if I pray(proseuchomai=to pray) in an unknown tongue, my
spirit(pneuma=spirit) prayeth(proseuchomai=to pray), but my
understanding(nous=mind) is unfruitful(akarpos=without
fruit).”
14:15
“What is it then? I will pray(proseuchomai=to
pray) with the
spirit(pneuma=spirit), and I will pray(proseuchomai=to pray) with
the
understanding(nous=mind) also: I will sing(to sing praise with a
musical instrument) with the spirit(pneuma=spirit), and I will sing(to
sing praise with a musical instrument) with the understanding(nous=
mind) also.”
14:16
“Else when thou shalt bless(eulogeo=to speak well of) with the
spirit(pnuema=spirit), how shall he that occupieth(anapleroo=to
fill up)
the room(topos=place)of the unlearned(idiotes=a private person)
say
Amen(amen=steadfast, so be it) at thy giving of thanks(eucharisteo=
thankfulness) , seeing he understandeth(eido=to see, be acquainted
with) not what thou sayest(ereo=to speak, tell, declare)?”
14:17
“For thou verily givest thanks(eucharisteo=be thankful) well,
but the
other is not edified(oikodomeo=to build up).”
14:18
“I thank(eucharisteo=be thankful) my God(theos=god,
object of
worship), I speak(laleo=to talk, tell) with tongues(glosa=language)
more
mallon=more) than ye all(pas=any):”
14:19
“Yet in the church(ekklesia=called out ones) I had rather(thelo=to
will)
speak(laleo=to talk, tell) five words(pente=five) with my understanding
(nous=mind), that by my voice I
might teach(katecheo=instruct orally)
others(allos=another) also, than ten thousand(murioi=ten thousand)
words(logos= word) in an unknown tongue(glossa=language).”
14:20
“Brethren(adelphoi=brethren), be not children(nepiazo=to
act as a
speechless babe) in understanding(phren=mind, heart): howbeit in
malice(kakia=evil) be ye children(nepiazo=to act as a speechless
babe),
but in understanding(phren=mind, heart) be men(teleios=perfect).”
14:21
“In the law(nomos=ordinance, law) it is written(graphomai=to
be
written: Isaiah 28:11-12), With men of other tongues(one of another or
different tongue) and other lips(cheilos=a lip) will I speak(laleo=to
talk,
tell) unto this people(laos=people); and yet for all that will they not
hear(eisakouo=to give ear to) me, saith the Lord(kurios=lord,
master).”
14:22
“Wherefore tongues(glossa=language) are for a sign(semeion=mark,
signal), not to them that believe(pisteuo=to trust, rely on), but to them
that believe (pisteuo = to trust, rely on) not: but prophesying(propheteia=
a proclamation or prediction made under the leadership of the Holy
Spirit) serveth not for them that believe(pisteuo=to
trust, rely on) not,
but for them which believe(pisteuo=to trust, rely on).”
14:23
“If therefore the whole(holos=all, entire) church(ekklesia=called
out
ones) be come together(sunerchomai=to come together) into one
place(to auto=upon or about the same time), and all(pas=every) speak
(laleo=to talk, tell) with tongues(glossa=language), and there come
in
those that are unlearned(idiotes=private
person), or unbelievers
(apistos=disbelieving, disobedient), will they not say(ereo=declare)
that
ye are mad(mainomai=raving, lunatic)?”
14:24
“But if all(pas=every) prophesy(propheteia=a proclamation
or
prediction under the leadership of the Holy Spirit) , and there come in
one(tis=a certain one)that believeth not, or one unlearned(idiotes=a
private person), he is convinced(elegcho=to convict) of all(pas=every),
he is judgedanakrino=to judge strictly) of all(pas=every):”
14:25
“And thus are the secrets(kruptos=concealed, hidden) of his
heart(kardia=the heart) made manifest(phaneros=apparent); and so
falling down(pipto=to fall) on his face(prosopon=face) he will
worship(proskun=to kiss toward the hand) God(theos=god, object of
worship), and report(apaggello=to tell off, away) that God(theos=god,
object of worship) is in you of a truth(aletheia=truth).”
14:26
“How is it then, brethren(adelphoi=brethren)?
When ye come
together(sunerchomai=to come together), everyone of you(hekastos=
each) hath a psalm(a song of praise on an instrument; see Ephesians
5:19; Colossians 3:16)), hath a doctrine(didachr=teaching), hath a
tongue(glossa=language), hath a revelation(apokalupsis=an
uncovering), hath an interpretation (hermeneia = explanation). Let
all(pas=points things) things be done unto edifying(oikodome=building
up).”
14:27
“If any man speak(laleo=to talk, tell) in an unknown
tongue(glossa=
language), let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by
course(ana meros=by rotation); and let one(heis=one) interpret
((hermeneuo=to explain thoroughly).”
14:28
“But if there be no interpreter(hermeneuo=to explain
thoroughly), let
him keep silence(sigao=to be or keep silence) in the church(ekklesia=the
called out ones); and let him speak(laleo=to talk, tell) to himself
(heautou=of himself), and to God(theos=god, object of worship).”
14:29
“Let the prophets(prophetes=one who proclaims or predicts by the
Holy Spirit) speak(laleo=to talk, tell) two(duo) or three(treis=three),
and let the other(allos=another) judge(diakrino=to judge
thoroughly).”
14:30
“If any thing be revealed(apokalupto=to uncover, unveil) to
another
(allos=not
the same) that sitteth by(kathemai=to sit), let the first(protos
=first) hold his peace(sigao=not to speak, not to speak).”
14:31
“For ye may all prophesy(prophetes=proclaim or predict by the
Holy
Spirit) one by one(kath hena=one by one), that all may learn(manthano
=to learn), and all may be comforted(parakaleo=to call near, exhort).”
14:32
“And the spirits(pneuma=spirit) of the prophets(prophetis=one
who
proclaims or predicts by the Holy Spirit) are subject(hupotasso=to set
in array under) to the prophets(prophetes=one who proclaims or
predicts by the Holy Spirit).”
14:33
“For God(theos=god, object of worship) is not the author
of confusion
(akatastasia=instability), but of peace(eirene=unity, concord), as in all
churches(ekklesia=called out ones) of the saints(hagios=set apart,
separate).”
14:34
“Let your women(gune=a woman, wife) keep silence(sigao=to
be quiet,
silent) in the churches(ekklesia=called out ones): for it is not
permitted
(epitrepo=to turn over, suffer)unto them to speak(laleo=to talk, tell);
but they are commanded to be under
obedience(hupetasso=to set in
array under), as also saith the law(nomos=ordinance, custom).”
14:35
“And if they will learn anything(manthano=to learn), let them ask
(eperatao=to inquire) their(idios=one’s own) husbands(aner=a man)
at
home(oikos=house, household): for it is a shameaischron=base
thing)
for women(gune=a woman, wife)to speak(laleo=to talk, tell) in the
church(ekklesia=the called out ones).”
14:36
“What? Came(exerchomai=to come forth, out of)the word(logos=word)
of God(theos=god, object of worship) out from you? Or came
katantao=to come down on or against) it unto you only(monos=alone)?”
14:37
“If any man think himself to be a prophet(prophetes=one
who
expounds or predicts by the Holy Spirit), or spiritual(pneumatikos=
spiritual), let him acknowledge(epiginosko=to make known fully) that
the things that I write(grapho=to write, inscribe) unto you are the
commandments(entole=thing
given in charge) of the Lord(kurios=lord,
master).”
14:38
“But if any man be ignorant(agnoeo=without knowledge), let him be
ignorant(agnoeo=without knowledge).”
14:39
“Wherefore, brethren(adelphoi=brethren), covet(zeloo=to be
zealous
for) to prophesy(to proclaim or predict by the Holy Spirit), and forbid
(koluo=to cut short, retrain) not to speak(laleo=talk, tell) with
tongues(glossa=language).”
14:40: Let
all things(pas=things, points) be done decently(euschemonos=
becomingly) and in order(taxis=arrangement, order).
