OLD TESTAMENT:
-
Deuteronomy
24:1-4 “When a man hath taken a wife, and married her,
and it come to pass that she find no favor (chem
favor, grace) in his eyes, because he hath found some
uncleanness (ervah a thing
offensive) in her: then let him write her a bill of
divorcement (kerithuth a cutting
off), and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And
when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another
man’s wife. And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill
of divorcement (kerithuth),
and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if
the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife; Her former
husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife,
after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the Lord:
and thou shall not cause the land to sin, which the Lord thy God
giveth thee for an inheritance.”
-
Malachi 2:14-16
“Yet ye say, wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between
thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt
treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy
convenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the
spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a gody seed. Therefore
take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against
the wife of his youth. For the Lord, thy God of Israel, saith that
he hateth putting away (shalach
to send forth): for one covereth violence with his garment,
saith the Lord of hosts; therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye
deal not treacherously.”
-
Isaiah 50:1
“Thus saith the Lord, Where is the bill of your mother’s
divorcement (kerithuth a casting
off), whom I have put away (shalach
to send forth)? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold
you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for
your transgressions is your mother put away (shalach
to send forth).”
-
Jeremiah 3:1, 8
“They say, If a man put away (shalach
to send forth) his wife, and she go from him, and become another
man’s shall he return unto her again? Shall not that land be greatly
polluted? But thou has played the harlot with many lovers; ye return
again to me, saith the Lord. And I say, when for all the causes
whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery (emoicheusen
married sex, sexual immorality, impurity) I had put her
away (shalach to send
forth), and give her a bill of divorce; yet her
treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the
harlot (zanah to commit
fornicaton (go a whoring) also.”

Hosea
NEW TESTAMENT:
-
Matthew 5:31-32
“It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away (apoluo
to let loose, let go free) his wife, let him give her a writing of
divorcement (apostasion a
setting away): But I say unto you, That whosoever shall
put away (apoluo
to let loose, let go free) his wife, saving for the cause of
fornication (porneia (premarital
sex), whoredom, illicit sexual acts), causeth her to commit
adultery (emoicheusen married
sex, sexual immorality, impurity): and whosoever shall marry her
that is divorced (apolul
to let loose, let go free) committeth adultery
(emoicheusen (married sex, sexual immorality,
impurity).”(See Matthew 5:28 “Adultery in the
heart.”)
- Matthew
19:3-12 “The Paharisees also came unto Jesus, tempting him,
and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away
(apoluo to let loose, let go free) his wife for
every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that
he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said,
For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to
his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore thy are not more
twain, but one flesh. What therefore god hath joined together, let not
man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a
writing of divorcement (kerithuth
a cutting off), and to put her away (apoluo
to let loose, let go free)? He saith unto them, Moses because of the
hardness of your hearts suffered you to put
away (apoluo to let loose, let go
free) your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto
you, Whoseover shall put away (apoluo
to let loose, let go free) his wife, except it be for fornication (porneio (premarital sex)
whoredom, illicit sexual acts)shall marry another, committeth adultery (emoicheusen married sex,
sexual immorality, impurity): and whoso marrieth her which is put away
doth commit adultery (emoicheusen
(married sex, sexual immorality, impurity).”
-
Mark 10:11-12 and
Luke 16:18 “And Jesus saith unto them, Whosoever shall
put away (apoluo to let
loose, let go free) his wife, and marry another, committeth
adultery (emoicheusen married
sex, sexual immorality, impurity) against her. And if a woman shall
put away (apoluo to let
loose, let go free) her husband, and be married to another, she
committeth adultery (emoicheusen
(married sex, sexual immorality, impurity).”
-
Romans 7:1-3
“Know ye not, brethren, for I speak to them that know the law, how
that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the
woman which hath an husband is bound by law to her husband so long
as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law
of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married
to another man, she shall be called an adulteress
(moichalis married sex, sexual immorality,
impurity): but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so
that she is no adulteress (moichalis
married sex sexual immorality, impurity), though she be married to
another man.”
-
I Corinthians
7:1-11, 39 “Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote
unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to
avoid Fornication (porneia premarital sex,
whoredom, elicit sexual acts), let every man have his own wife, and
let every woman have her own husband. And to the married I command,
yet not I, but the Lord. Let not the wife depart
(chorizo to put apart) from her husband: But
and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her
husband: and let not the husband put away (aphiemi
to send away) his wife. The wife is bound by the law as long as her
husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be
married to whom she will; only in the Lord.”
-
I Corinthians
7:12-16 “But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any
brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell
with him, let him not put her away (aphiemi
to send away). And the woman which hath an husband that
believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her
not leave (aphiemi to send
away, let go). For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the
wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else
were your children unclean; but now are they holy. But if
the unbelieving depart (chorizo
to put apart), let him depart (chorizo
to put apart). A brother or a sister
is not under bondage (douleo to
enslave) in such cases:
but God hath called us to peace. For what knowest thou, O wife,
whether thou shalt save thy husband? Or how knowest thou, O man,
whether thou shalt save thy wife?”
-
I Timothy 5:11-15
“I will that the younger widows marry (gameo
to marry), bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the
adversary to speak reproachfully.”
-
Hebrews 13:4
“Marriage (gamos marriage)
is honorable (timios
honorable) in all and the bed undefiled
(unpolluted, immaculate).”
