NAMES AND LEADERSHIP

1.   APPOINTED is the Greek word tithemi meaning to put or place.  II Timothy1:11 “I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.”

2.   APOSTLE is the Greek word apostolos meaning one sent forth.  Acts 15:6 “The apostles and elders came together.”  Acts 14:14 “The apostles, Barnabas and Paul.  I Corinthians 12:28 “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers. 

I Corinthians 15:7 “After that He was seen of James; then of all the apostles.”  Galatians 1:19 “But other of the apostles saw I non, save James the Lord’s brother.”  Ephesians 2:20 “Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone:”  Ephesians 4:11 “And He(Christ)gave some, apostles;…”I Thessalonians 3:2 “(Paul)sent Timotheus our brother, and minister of God, and our fellow-laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:”  Titus 1:5 “For this cause left I(Paul) thee(Titus)in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee;”

3.   BELIEVER is the Greek word pisteuo meaning one who relies on or one who trusts.  Acts 5:14 “And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both men and women.”

4.   BISHOP is the Greek word episkopos to oversee, superintend.  Philippians 1:1 “Paul to the bishops and deacons.”  Acts 1:20 “His(Judas) bishopric let another take.” (Qualifications: I Timothy 3:1f; Titus 1:7f)

5.   BRETHREN is the Greek word adelphoi meaning one who is a brother. Matthew 23:8 “Jesus: But be not ye called  Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.”  Acts 15:23 “The apostles, elders and brethren send greetings.”

6.   ELDER is the Greek word presbuteros meaning an aged person.  Acts 11:30 “They sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.”(Note: first mention of elders in Acts) I Peter 5:1 “The elders, which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder.”  II John 1 & III John 1“The elder(John).” Acts 15:6 “The apostles and elders came together.”

7.   EVANGELIST is the Greek word euaggelistas meaning one who announces good tidings.  Acts 21:8 “Philip the evangelist.  Ephesians 4:11 “And He gave some…evangelists…”  II Timothy 4:5 “Timothy, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”

8.   MINISTER is the Greek word diakoneo meaning to serve.  Acts 19:22 “So he(Paul)sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus, and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.” I Thessalonians 3:2 “(Paul)sent Timotheus our brother, and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:”   I Peter 4:10-11“As every man hath received the gift, even minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth:”

9.   ORDAINED is the Greek word tithemi meaning to put, place or set.  Acts 14:23 “They(Paul and Barnabas)ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.  I Timothy 2:7 “Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.”  Titus 1:5 “I(Paul)left thee(Titus)in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:”

10. PASTOR is the Greek word poimen meaning to tend and guard.  Ephesians 4:11 “And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;”

11. PREACHER is the Greek word kerux meaning a crier, proclaimer, herald.  I Timothy 2:7 “I am ordained(tithemi=to put, place, set)a preacher and an apostle.”  II Timothy 1:11 “I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle and a teacher of the Gentiles.”

12. PROPHET is the Greek word prophetis meaning a public expounder.  Acts 11:27 “And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch…Agabus.”  Acts 13:1 “Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers;”  Acts 15:32 “And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.”

13. SAINT is the Greek word hagios meaning one who is set apart, separate, holy.  Romans 1:7 “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God called to be saints:”

14. SERVANT is the Greek word doulos meaning a slave. II Peter 1:1 “Simon    Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ.”

15. TEACHER is the Greek word didaskalos meaning instructor.  Acts 13:1 “Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers;” II Timothy 1:11 “I am appointed a preacher, and apostle and a teacher of the Gentiles.”
