Hebrew:     yaal = to be pleased

                 shama = to hearken

                 yatab be-ene = to be good in the eyes of

 

Greek:      arkeo = to suffice

                autorkeia = sufficient

                autarkes = self sufficient

 

OLD TESTAMENT:

1.   Genesis 37:27 “Come let us sell him(Joseph)to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him(Joseph); for he is our brother and our flesh.  And his brethren were content(shama).”

2.   Exodus 2:21 “And Moses was content(yaal) to dwell with the man(Ruel their father): and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.  And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.”

3.   Leviticus 10:20 “And when Moses heard that, he was content(yatab be-ene).”

4.   Joshua 7:7 “And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us?  Would to God we had been content(yaal), and dwelt on the other side Jordan!”

5.   Judges 17:11 “And the Levite was content(yaal) to dwell with the man(Micah); and the young man was unto Micah as one of his sons.”

6.   Judges 19:6 “And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content(yaal), I pray thee and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.”

7.   II Kings 5:23 “And Naaman said, Be content(yaal), take two talents.  And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.”

3.   Philippians 4:11 “Not that I(Paul) speak in respect of want: for I(Paul) have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content(autarkes).”

4.   I Timothy 6:6 “But godliness with contentment(autorkeia) is great gain.”

5.   I Timothy 6:8 “And having food and raiment let us be therewith content(arkeo).”

6.   Hebrews 13:5 “Be content(arkeo) with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
