GIFT OF CELIBACY

 

Celibacy- agamos unwedded, unmarried

 

I Corinthians 7:6-9: “But I speak this by permission (suggnome fellow knowledge, concession, permission; ginosko to know, allow, be aware, perceive, can speak, be sure, understand), and not of commandment.  For I would that all men were even as I myself.  But every man hath his proper (idios pertaining to self, one’s own, private, separate) gift (charisma divine gift, spiritual endowment, miraculous gift, free gift; charizomai  to grant as a favor, gratuitously, in kindness, freely give; charis graciousness, gratifying, divine influence upon the heart, gratitude, gift; chairo to be full of cheer, happy, well off, joyful, rejoice) of God, one after this manner (houto in this way, after this manner, on this fashion, like manner), and another after that. 

I say therefore to the unmarried (agamos unmarried; gamos nuptials, marriage, wedding) and widows (chera lacking a husband), it is good (kalos beautiful, good, valuable, virtuous, better) for them if they abide (meno to stay in a given place, state, relation, continue, dwell, abide, endure, remain, stand, tarry for) even as I.  But if they cannot contain (egkrateuomai to exercise self-restraint, chastity, be temperate; egkrates strong in a thing, mastering, self-controlled, temperate; kratos dominion, might, power, strength), let them marry (gameo to wed, marry; gamos nuptials, marriage, wedding): for it is better (kreitton stronger, better, nobler, best; kratos vigor, dominion, might, power, strength) to marry (same as above) than to burn (puroo to kindle, be ignited, inflamed, lust, burn, be on fire; pur fire, lightning, fiery).”

I Corinthians 7:26 “I suppose therefore that this is good for the present (enistemi to place on hand, impend, be instant, be at hand, present; histemi to stand, abide, continue, covenant, establish, hold up, stand forth; tithemi to place, commit, lay aside, purpose, set forth, settle) distress (anagke constraint, distress, must needs, of necessity, needful; agkale a bend or ache, an arm as curved, arm), I say, that it is good for a man so to be.”

I Corinthians 7:29 “But this I say, brethren, the time (kairos set or proper time, opportunity, due season, due, short, a while; chromos a space of time, a particular period, opportunity, season) is short (sustello to send, draw together, enshroud  corpse for burial, short, wind up; stello to set fast, repress, avoid, withdraw self, abstaining from associating with): it remaineth (esti must needs, remaineth, wrestle, endure for a while), that both (kai also, both) they that have wives (gune woman, specifically a wife) be as though (hos in that manner, as is were) they had none (me absolute denial, negative, none);”

I Corinthians 7:32 “But I would have you without carefulness (amerimnos not anxious, without care, secure; merimna distraction, care). He that is unmarried (agamos unmarried) careth (merimnao to be anxious about, have care, take thought) for the things that belong  to the Lord (kurios supremacy, supreme in authority, controller, God, Lord Master), how he may please (aresko to be agreeable, seek to be so, please, exciting emotion) the Lord (Same as above):”

I Corinthians 7:34 “The unmarried woman (same as above) careth for the things (merimnao to be anxious about, have care, take thought) of the Lord (Same as above), that she may be holy (hagios sacred, pure, blameless, consecrated, holy; hagnos clean, innocent, modest, chaste, pure) both in body (soma the body, bodily) and in spirit (pneuma breath, human spirit, rational soul: mind, will, emotion):”

I Corinthians 7:35 “And this I speak for your own profit (sumphero to bear together, collect, advantage, be better for, be expedient, be good, be profitable for); not that I may cast (epiballo to throw upon, beat into, cast upon, lay on) a snare (brochos noose, snare) upon, you, but for that which is comely (euschemon well formed, decorous, noble, comely honorable; eu good, well done), and that ye may attend upon (euprosedros sitting well towards, diligent service, attend upon; eu good, well, well done; prosedreuo to attend as a servant) the Lord (Same as above) without distraction (aperipastos free from, without distraction; perispao to drag all around, distract with care, cumber).”
