SUN, MOON, STARS

The solar year calendar is used by most of the world to determine days, weeks, months and years.  “B.C.” (Before Christ) and “A.D. (Anno Domini, Latin for “year of our Lord”)” are used to refer to the years on both the Julian and Gregorian calendar and of the two the Gregorian calendar is most widely used in the world today.

However, the Jewish calendar does not use the words “A.D.” and “B.C.” but rather, C.E. (Common or Christian Era) and B.C.E. (Before the Common Era).

The Jewish calendar is based on three astronomical phenomena: 1) the rotation of the earth about it axis (a day); 2) the revolution of the moon about the earth (a month); 3) and the revolution of the earth about the sun (a year).  These three phenomena are independent of each other; however, the Jewish calendar coordinates all three of these astronomical phenomena.

The Hebrew feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, Weeks, Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles were based on moon cycles instead of sun cycles, and the years are numbered from Creation.

As we study what the Scripture has to say about the “Sun, Moon and Stars”, we should note that this subject is often viewed in the extreme of either “worshipping” the heavenly bodies or “ignoring them as irrelevant” rather than understanding their purpose as taught in the Bible.

SUN

Old Testament

Hebrew:     sun    or light

                             chammah heat

                             cheres itch, burning, heat

                             shemesh a ministrant, the sun

4.     Genesis 28:11 “And he (Jacob) lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun (shemesh)was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.”

11.                          Deuteronomy 4:19 “And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun (shemesh), and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.”

17.                          II Samuel 23:4 “(David): And he (Lord) shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun (shemesh) riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.”

40.                          Ecclesiastes 12:1-2 “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; While the sun (shemesh), or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:”

42.                          Isaiah 13:10-13 “For the stars of heaven and the constellations (kasal = to be fat, silly, stupid, foolish; any notable constellation, specifically Orion, burly one) thereof shall not give their light: the sun (shemesh) shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.  And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.  I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir (ophir = a golden region in the East).  Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the Lord of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.”

43.                          Isaiah 24:17-23 (Larger Prophetic Passage 24:1-23) “Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.  And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.  The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.  The earth shall reel to and from like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.  And it shall come to pass in that, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.  And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun (chammah) ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.”

44.                          Isaiah 30:26 “Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun (chammah), and the light of the sun (chammah) shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.”

45.                          Isaiah 38:7-8 “And this shall be a sign unto thee from the Lord, that the Lord will do this thing that he hath spoken; Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun (shemesh) dial of Ahaz (achaz = name of a Jewish king), ten degrees backward.  So the sun (shemesh) returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.”

46.                          Isaiah 48:8-13 “Thus saith the Lord, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves.  They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.  They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun (shemesh) smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.  And I will make all my mountains a way, and highways shall be exalted.  Behold, these shall come far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim (siyniym = a distant Oriental region; China).  Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.”

47.                          Isaiah 59:19-21 “So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun (shemesh).  When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.  And the Redeemer (gaal = to redeem, to be next of kin, deliverer, purchase, ransom) shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.  As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and forever.”

48.                          Isaiah 60:15-22 “Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.  Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Savior and they redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.  For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.  Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.  The sun (shemesh) shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.  Thy sun (shemesh) shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.  Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.  A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in his time.”

49.                          Jeremiah 31:31-40 “Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun (shemesh) for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me forever.  Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.  Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.  And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.  And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the Lord; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more forever.”

50.                          Ezekiel 8:16-18 “And he brought me into the inner court of the Lord’s house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun (shemesh) toward the east.  Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man?  Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here?  For they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.  Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.”

51.                          Ezekiel 32: 7-8 “And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun (shemesh) with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.  All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God.  I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.  Yea, I will make many people amazed at thee, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee, when I shall brandish my sword before them; and they shall tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of thy fall.”

52.                          Joel 2:10-11 (Larger Prophetic Passage 2:1-32) “The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun (shemesh) and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shinning.  And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?”

53.                          Joel 2:25-27 (Expanding on the Larger Passage)“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.  And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.  And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

54.                          Joel 2:28-29 (Expanding on the Larger Passage) “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.”

55.                          Joel 2:30-32 (Expanding on the Larger Passage) “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.”

56.                          Joel 3:9-15 (Larger Prophetic Passage 3:1-21) “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.  Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Lord.  Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heather round about.  Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.  Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.  The sun (shemesh) and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

57.                          Joel 3:16-21 (Expanding on Larger Passage) “The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.  So shall ye know that I am Lord your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.  And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.  Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.  But Judah shall dwell forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.  For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleanses: for the Lord dwelleth in Zion.”

58.                          Amos 5:8 “(Seek him) that maketh the seven stars (kiymah = a jewel, cluster of stars, the Pleiades, seven stars) and Orion (kesiyl = any notable constellation, specifically Orion, as if a burly one, fat, foolish), and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark (chashak = to be dark, withholding light, to darken, be black, cause darkness) with night (layil leyl layelah = night, night season, as twist away of the light, fold back): that calleth (qara = accosting, to call out to, properly address by name, proclaim, encounter) for the waters (mayim = water) of the sea (yam = roar, sea, noisy surf, large body of water), and poureth (shaphak = to spill forth, gush out, pour out) them out upon the face (above, over, upon) of the earth: the Lord is his name:”

59.                          Amos 8:9-14 “And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun (shemesh) to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day: And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.  Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of bearing the words of the Lord: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.  In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.  They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy God, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beersheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.”

60.                          Amos 9:11-15 “In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the heaven, which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doeth this.  Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.  And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.  And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled upon out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God.”

61.                          Jonah 4:8-11 “And it came to pass, when the sun (shemesh) did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun (shemesh) beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.  And God said to Jonah, Doest though well to be angry for the gourd?  And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.  Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not labored, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than six score thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle.”

62.                          Micah 3:6-12 “Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun (shemesh) shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.  Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded: yea, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God.  But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.  Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity.  They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.  The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priest thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us?  None evil can come upon us.  Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forests.”

63.                          Micah 4:1-7 “But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.  And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.  And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more.  But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it.  For all people will walk everyone in the name of his god, and will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.  In that day saith the Lord, will I assemble her that halteth and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted; And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, ever forever.”

64.                          Nahum 3:16-17 “Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away.  Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun (shemesh) ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.”

65.                          Malachi 1:1 “For from the rising of the sun (shemesh) even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in very place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of  hosts.”

66.                          Malachi 4:1-6 “For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.  But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun (shemesh) of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.  And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this saith the Lord of hosts.  Remember ye the Law of Moses my servant which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statues and judgments.  Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.”
