Prophets:
Differences Between
Old Testament & New Testament
Old Testament Prophets:
-
The Old Testament prophets
gave God's very word, guidance, exhortation and confirmation.
The Old Testament prophets received and
spoke divine revelation that would be recorded as the
Old Testament Scriptures. God was entrusting over
half of of His word to those prophets. The
New Testament recognizes and affirms this
according to the following passages:
Matthew 22:36-40 “Master, which is the greatest
commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the
Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all
thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is
like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On
these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Romans 1:1-2 “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called
to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, which
he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures.”
Romans 16:25-26 “Now to him that is of power to
stablish you according to my gospel,
and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of
the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, but now is
made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets,
according to the commandment of the everlasting
God, made know to all nations for the obedience of faith:
to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen”
II Peter 1:18-21
“And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with
him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure
word of
prophecy;
whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth
in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your
hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the
scripture is of any private
interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will
of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy
Ghost.”
-
The Old Testament prophets
were given the responsibility to establish the
Old Testament Scriptures. God Himself ensured
that the quality of Old Testament
prophetic ministry was infallible.
The prophets themselves, as people, were
not perfect, but the word they spoke from the Lord was perfect
and infallible as is recorded in the
following passages:
I Samuel 3:19-21, 9:6 “And Samuel grew, and the Lord
was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the
ground. And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew
that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.
And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord
revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.”
I Samuel 9:6 “And
he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city
a man
of God(Samuel),
and he is an honorable man;
all that he saith cometh surely to pass:
now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we
should go.”
Isaiah 44:26 “That
confirmeth the word of his servant(Isaiah),
and performeth the
counsel of his messengers;
that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shall be inhabited; and to the cities
of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places
thereof:”
Jeremiah 1:11-13
“Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me,
saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an
almond tree. Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen: for
I will hasten my word to
perform it.
And the word of the Lord came unto me the second
time, saying, What
seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof
is toward the north.”
-
Some of the Old Testament Prophets:
Abraham -
Genesis 20:7 “Now therefore restore the
man(Abraham)his wife(Sarah); for he is a prophet,
and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore
her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that
are thine.”
Aaron – Exodus 7:1 “And the Lord
said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and
Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.”
70 Elders, Eldad & Medad – Numbers 11:24-29
“And Moses
went out, and
told the
people the words of the Lord,
and gathered the seventy men of the elders
of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle. And the
Lord came
down in a cloud,
and spake unto him,
and took of the spirit that was upon
him,
and gave it unto the seventy elders:
and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested
upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.
But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one
was Eldad,
and the name of the other Medad:
and the spirit rested upon them;
and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the
tabernacle: and they
prophesied in the camp.
And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said,
Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.
And Joshua
the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered
and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.
And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake?
Would God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the
Lord
would put his spirit upon them!”
Unnamed
Prophet –
Judges 6:8
“The Lord sent a prophet
unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith
the Lord God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought
your forth out of the house of bondage...”
Samuel the
Prophet –
I Samuel 3:20
“And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that
Samuel was
established to be a prophet of the Lord.”
I Samuel
19:20 “And Saul
sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the
company of the prophets
prophesying,
and Samuel standing as appointed over
them,
the Spirit of God was upon the messengers
of Saul, and they also prophesied.”
I Samuel
28:14-15 “And
Saul perceived that it was Samuel...And
Samuel
said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me
up?...Then said Samuel,
Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed
from thee, and is become thine enemy?
II Samuel 6:12-15
“It was told King David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house
of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of
the ark of
God.
So David went and brought up the ark of God
from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.
And it was so, that when they that bare the ark
of the Lord had
gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. And
David danced before the Lord with all his might;
and David was girded with a linen ephon. So David and all the
house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord
with shouting,
and with sound of the trumpet.”
II Samuel 6:17-19, 21-22
“And David said unto
Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy
father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over his
house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over
Israel: here will I play before the Lord.
And I will yet be more vile than thus,
and will be base in mine own sight:
and of the maidservants which thou has spoken of, of them shall
I be had in honor. And they brought the ark of
the Lord, and set
it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle
that David had
pitched for it: and David offered burnt
offerings and peace offerings
before the Lord. And as soon as David had made an end of the
offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the
people in the name of the Lord of hosts. And he dealt among all
the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to
the women as men,
to every one a cake of bread,
and a good piece of flesh,
and a flagon of wine.
Os all the people departed every one to his house. Then
David returned to bless his household.”
I Chronicles 15:25-29
“So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over
thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord
out of the house of Obededom with joy. And it came to pass, when
God helped the Levities that bare the ark of
the covenant of the Lord,
that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams. And David was
clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levities that
bare the ark,
and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the
singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen. Thus Israel
brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord
with shouting
and with the sound of the
cornet
and with trumpets
and with cymbals,
making a noise with psalteries
and harps.
And it came to pass as the ark of the covenant
of the Lord came
to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looking
out at a window saw king David dancing
and playing;
and she despised him in her heart.”
I Chronicles 16:1-3
“So they brought the ark of God,
and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for
it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings up
before God. And when David had made an end of offering the burnt
offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name
of the Lord. And he dealt to everyone of Israel, both man and
woman, to every one a loaf of bread,
and a good piece of flesh
and a flagon of wine.
And he appointed certain of the Levities to minister before the
ark of the Lord, and to record,
and to thank
and
praise the Lord
God of Israel:”

midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the
King, the Lord of hosts...One of the seraphims flew unto me,
having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the
tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and
said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine
iniquity is taken away,

beginning,
and from ancient times the things that are not
yet done, saying,
My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my
pleasure;”
Isaiah 53:1-12
“Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the
Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender
plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he
hath no form nor comeliness; and when we
shall see him, there is no beauty that we
should desire him.
He is despised
and rejected of men;
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief:
and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and
we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our
griefs, and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God,
and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
he was bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our peace was upon him;
and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned everyone to his own way;
and the Lord
hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he
opened not his mouth:
he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and
as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his
mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall
declare his generation? For he was cut off out
of the land of the living:
for the transgression of my people was he
stricken. And
he made his grave with the
wicked,
and with the rich in his death;
because he had done no violence,
neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him;
he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make
his soul an offering for sin,
he shall see his seed,
he shall prolong his days,
and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall
be
satisfied: by
his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for
he
shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the
great, and he shall divide the spoil with the
strong:
because he poured out his soul unto death:
and he was numbered with the transgressors;
and he bare
the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.”

that spake unto me. And he said unto me, Son of
man I send thee to the children of Israel...”
Ezekiel 33:30-33
“Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word
that cometh
forth from
the Lord. And
they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before
thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do
them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart
goeth after their covetousness. And, lo, thou art unto them as a
very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play
well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them
not. And when this cometh to pass,
lo, it
will come,
then shall they know that a prophet hath been
among them.”
Daniel
-
Daniel 2:19-23
“Then
was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision.
Then Daniel
blessed the God of heaven. Daniel
answered and said,
Blessed be the name of God forever and ever: for wisdom and
might are his: And he changeth the times and the seasons: he
removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the
wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.
He revealeth the deep and secret things:
he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with
him. I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers,
who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast
made known unto me now what we desired of thee:

matter.”

forth, and I am come to shew thee;
for thou art greatly beloved:
therefore understand the matter, and consider
the vision.
Seventy weeks
are determined upon the people and upon thy holy city, to finish
the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make
reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting
righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to
anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from
the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build
Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince
shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street
shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And
after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be
cut off, but not
for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall
destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end there of shall
be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are
determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one
week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice
and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of
abominations he shall make it desolate, even unto the
consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the
desolate.”
Daniel 12:1-3
“And at that time
shall Michael stand up,
the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people:
and there shall be a time of trouble,
such as never was since there was a nation even
to that same time:
and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that
shall be found written in the book. And many of
them that sleep in the dust of the earth,
shall awake, some to everlasting life,
and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
And they that be wise shall shine as the
brightness of the
firmament;
and they that turn many to righteousness as the
stars for ever and ever.”
Daniel
12:4-13 “But
thou, O Daniel,
shut up the words, and seal the book,
even to the time of the end:
many shall run to and fro,
and knowledge shall
be increased.
Then I Daniel looked,
and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the
bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the
river. And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon
the waters of the river, How long shall it be
to the end of these wonders?
And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters
of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand
unto heaven, and swear by him that liveth forever that
it shall be for a time, times, and an half;
and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the
holy people, all these
things shall be finished.
And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord,
what shall be the end of these things?
And he said, Go thy way, Daniel:
for the words are closed up and sealed till the
time of the end.
Many shall be
purified, and made white, and tried:
but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall
understand; but the wise shall understand.
And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away,
and the abomination that maketh desolate set up,
there shall be a thousand two
hundred and ninety days.
Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three
hundred and five and thirty days. But go thou
thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy
lot at the end of the days.”

“The word of the Lord that came unto Hosea,
the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and
Hezekiah, kings of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of
Joash, king of Israel. The beginning of the
word
of the Lord by Hosea.
And the Lord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of
whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed
great whoredom, departing from the Lord. And he
went and took Gomer the
daughter of Diblaim;
which conceived, and bare him a son...”

was he preserved.”

afterward, that I will pour out my
spirit upon all flesh;
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
your young men shall see visions:
And also upon the servants and upon the
handmaids in those days will I pour out my
spirit.
And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in
the earth, blood,
and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into
darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible
day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever
shall call on the name of the Lord shall be
delivered:
for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the
Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the
Lord shall call.”

Amos 7:14-15
“Then answered Amos,
and said to Amazih, I was no prophet,
neither was I a prophet's son;
but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of
sycamore fruit:
And the Lord took me as I followed the flock,
and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my
people Israel...”
Amos 9:13-15
“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord,
that the plowman shall
overtake the reaper,
and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed;
and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and the hills shall
melt. And I will bring again
the captivity of my people of Israel,
and they shall build the waste cities, and
inhabit them;
and they shall plant vineyards, and drink th
wine thereof;
they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit
of them. And
I will plant them upon their
land,
and they shall no more be pulled up out of
their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God.”

thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall

shall be deliverance,
and there shall be
holiness;
and the house of Jacob shall possess their
possessions. And
saviors shall come upon on mount Zion to judge the mount of
Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.”
Jonah –
II Kings 14:25
“According to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which he spake by
the hand of his servant Jonah,
the son of Amittai, that
prophet,
which was of Gathhepher...”
Jonah 1:1-2
“Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah
the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to
Nineveh...”
Jonah 1:3f
“But
Jonah rose up to flee
unto Tarshis from the presence of the
Lord...

Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly...And
the Lord spake unto the fish,
and it vomited out Jonah upon the

“So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of
the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three day's
journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey,
and he cried, and said, YET FORTY DAYS, AND NINEVEH SHALL BE
OVERTHROWN!”
Jonah 3:510
“So the people of Nineveh believed God,
and proclaimed a fast,
and put on sackcloth,
from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word
came unto the king of Nineveh,
and he arose from his throne, and he laid his
robe from him,
and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in
ashes. And he
caused it to be proclaimed and published
through Nineveh by the decree of the king
and his nobles, saying,
Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock,
taste of any thing: let them
not feed, nor drink water:
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth,
and cry mightily unto God:
yea, let them turn everyone from his evil way,
and from the
violence that is in their hands.
Who can tell if God will turn and repent,
and turn
away, from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
And God saw their works, that
they turned from
their
evil way; and
God repented of the evil, that he had said that he
would do unto them; and did it not.”
Jonah 4:1f
“But
it displeased Jonah exceedingly,
and he was very
angry...Take

shall be exalted above the hills;
and people shall flow unto it.
And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and
let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of
the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will
walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the
word
of the Lord from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations
afar off; and they shall beat their swords into
plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks:
nation shall not life up a sword against
nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
But they shall sit every man under his vine and
under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the
mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it...”

Habakkuk 2:1-4
“I will stand upon my watch,
and set me upon the tower,
and will watch to see what he will say unto me,
and what I shall answer when I
am reproved.
And the Lord answered me, and said,
Write the vision,
and make it plain upon tables,
that he may run that readeth it. For the vision
is
yet for an appointed time,
but at the end it shall speak, and not lie:
though it
tarry, wait for it;
because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but
the just shall live by his
faith.
Habakkuk 2:20
“But
the Lord is in his holy temple:
let all the earth keep silence before him.”
Habakkuk
3:17-19 “Although
the fig tree shall not blossom,
neither shall
fruit be in
the vines;
the labor of the olive shall fail,
and the fields shall yield
no meat;
the flock shall be cut off from the fold,
and there shall be no herd in
the stalls:
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.
The Lord God is my strength,
and he will make my feet like hinds' feet,
and he will make me to walk upon mine high
places.”
Zephaniah -
Zephaniah 1:1

Zephaniah
3:8-9 “Therefore
wait ye upon me,
saith the Lord, until the day that I rise up to the prey:
for my determination is to gather the nations,
that I may assemble the kingdoms,
to pour upon them mine indignation, even all
my fierce anger:
for all the earth shall be devoured with the
fire of my
jealousy.
For then will I turn to the people a pure
language,
that they may all call upon the name of the Lord,
to serve him with one consent.”
Zephaniah 3:13-20
“The remnant
of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies;
neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in
their mouth: for
they shall feed
and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
Sing, O daughter of Zion;
shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all
the heart, O daughter of
Jerusalem.
The Lord hath taken away thy judgments,
he hath cast out
thine enemy:
the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the
midst of thee:
thou
shalt not see evil any more.
In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear
thou not:
and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.
The Lord thy God in
the midst of thee is mighty;
he will save, he will rejoice over thee with
joy;
he
will rest in his love,
he will joy over thee with singing.
I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly,
who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.
Behold, at that time I will undo all that
afflict
thee:
and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven
out; and I will get them praise and fame in
every land where they have been put to
shame.
At that time will I bring you again, even in
the time that I gather you:
for I will make you a name and a praise among
all people of the earth,
when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the
Lord.”

prophet unto

Joshua, the son of Josedech, the high priest...Then came the
word of the Lord by Haggai
the prophet,
saying...”
Haggai 2:6-9
“For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little
while, and I will shake the heavens, and the
earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
And I will shake all nations,
and the desire of all nations shall come:
and I
will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord
of hosts. The
silver is mine, and
the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.
The glory of this latter house shall be greater
than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts:
and in this place will I give peace, saith the
Lord of hosts.”
Zechariah
-
Zechariah
1:1, 7 “In the
eighth month, in the second year of Darius,
came the
word of the Lord unto Zechariah,
the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the
prophet,
saying...
Zechariah
2:10-13 “Sing and
rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell
in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. And many
nations shall be
joined to the Lord in that day,
and shall be my people:
and I will dwell in the
midst of thee,
and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath
sent me unto
thee.
And the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in
the holy land,
and shall choose Jerusalem again.
Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord, for he
is
raised up out of his holy habitation.”
Zechariah 9:9
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of
Jerusalem:
behold, thy King cometh unto thee:
he is just,
and having salvation;
lowly,
and riding upon an ass,
and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
Zechariah 12:2-3, 8-10
“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of
trembling unto all the people round about,
when they shall be in the siege both against
Judah and against Jerusalem.
And in that day will I make Jerusalem a
burdensome stone for all people:
all that burden themselves with it shall be
cut in pieces,
though all the people of the earth be gathered
together against
it.
In that day shall the Lord defend the
inhabitants of Jerusalem;
and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David;
and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord
before them. And it shall come to pass in that
day, that I will seek to destroy all nations that come
against Jerusalem.
And I will pour upon the house of David, and
upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of
supplications:
and they shall look upon me whom they have
pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his
only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in
bitterness for his firstborn.”
Zechariah
13:1“In
that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David
and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.”
Zechariah
14:1-4 “Behold,
the day of the Lord cometh,
and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For
I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to
battle;
and the city shall be taken,
and the houses rifled, and the women ravished;
and half of the city shall go forth into captivity,
and the
residue of
the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Then shall the Lord go forth,
and fight against those nations,
as when he fought in the day of battle. And his
feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives,
which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the
mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst
thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be
a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove
toward the north, and half of it toward the south.”
Zechariah 14:5-9, 16
“And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the
valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall
flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of
Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall
come, and all the saints with thee.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not
be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known
to the Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that
at evening time it shall be light. And it shall be
in that day, that
living waters shall go out from Jerusalem;
half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the
hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. And
the Lord shall be king over all the earth:
in that day shall there be one Lord, and his
name one.
Zechariah
14:20-21 “In that
day shall there be upon the bells of the horses,
HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD;
and the pots in the Lord's house shall be like the bowls before
the altar. Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be
holiness unto the Lord of hosts; and all they that sacrifice
shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day
there shall be nor more Canaanite in the house of the Lord of
hosts.”

way before me:
and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come
to his
temple,
even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold,
he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. But who may abide the
day of his coming? And who shall stand when th appeareth? For he
is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's soap: And
he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver:
and he shall purify the sons of Levi,
and purge them as gold and silver,
that they may offer unto the Lord an offering
in righteousness.
Malachi 4:5-6
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet

My Prophets
- Psalms 105:15
“Touch not mine anointed,
and do my prophets
no harm.”
-
In the Old Testament, if
a prophet misspoke he was stoned to death
according to the following passages:
Deuteronomy 18:20
“But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a
word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that
shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.”
Also,
according to Deuteronomy 18:21-22,
“But if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know
the word which the Lord hath not spoken?
When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if
the thing followeth not, nor come to pass, that is spoken, but the
prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shall not be afraid of
him.”
Also in
Deuteronomy 13:1-5
“If there arise among you a prophet,
or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a
sign or a wonder, and the sign or the
wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto
thee, saying, Let us go after other
gods, which thou has not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt
not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or
that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God
proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God
with all you heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk
after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments,
and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and
cleave unto him.
And that prophet, or that dreamer of
dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath
spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God,
which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of
the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the Lord
thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the
evil away from the midst of thee.”
-
Joel 2:28-32 “And it shall come
to pass afterward, that I will pour out my

upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days
will I pour out my spirit. And I
will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and
fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into
darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible
day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever
shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in Mt
Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath
said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.”
Acts 2:16-21
“But this is that which was spoken by the prophet
Joel: And it shall
come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my
Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men
shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will
pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I
will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath;
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: The sun shall be turned into
darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day
of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall
call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Amos 3:7 “Surely the Lord God will do nothing but, he
revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”

and confirmed them.”

prophets
and teachers;

As they ministered to the Lord,
and fasted,
the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul

and laid their hands upon
them,
they sent them away.
So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost,
departed...”

Acts 15:22, 27, 32-34, 40
“Then pleased it the apostles and elders,
with the whole church,
to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch
with Paul
and Barnabas;
namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas,
chief men among the brethren; We have sent therefore
Judas and Silas,
who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. And
Judas and Silas,
being prophets also
themselves,
exhorted the brethren with many words,
and confirmed them.

he spake
and taught diligently the things of the Lord,
knowing only the baptism of
John.
And he began to speak boldly
in the synagogue: whom when Aquila
and Priscilla
had heard, they took him unto them,
and expounded unto him
the way of God more perfectly.
And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote,
exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come,
helped them much
which had believed through grace: For he
mightily convinced the Jews,
and that publicly,
shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.”
Romans 1:1-2

the scripture saith,
Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”

now is made manifest,

Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman

Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he
that believeth on him shall not be confounded.”
II Peter 1:20
“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the
scripture
is of any
private interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will
of
man:
but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

Acts 20:22
“And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not
knowing the things that shall be fall me there: Save that the
Holy Ghost
witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide
me. But none of these things move me, neither count
I my life dear unto myself,
so that I might finish my course with joy,
and the ministry, which I have received of
the Lord Jesus,
to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”
Acts 21:8-9
“And the next day we that
were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we
entered into the house of Philip the evangelist,
which was one of the seven;
and abode with him. And the same man had four
daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.”
Acts 21:10-14 “And
as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judea a
certain prophet, named Agabus.
And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his
own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith
the Holy Ghost,
So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle,
and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. And when we
heard these things, both we, and they of that place,
besought him not to go up
to Jerusalem.
Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart?
For I am ready not to be bound only, but also to
die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying,
The will of the Lord be done.”
I Corinthians 14:3
“But he that prophesieth
speaketh unto men to edification,
exhortation,
and comfort.”
I Corinthians 14:5 “I would that ye all spake with
tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for
greater is he that prophesieth than he that
speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the
church may receive edifying.”
I Corinthians 14:6 “Now, brethren, if I come unto you
speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak
to you either by revelation, or by
knowledge, or by prophesying, or by
doctrine?
I Corinthians 14: 12 “Even so ye,
forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual
gifts, seek that ye may excel to the
edifying of the church.”
I Corinthians 14:22 “Wherefore
tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that
believe not: but prophesying serveth not for
them that believe not, but for them which believe.”
I Corinthians 14:23-25
“If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and
all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned,
or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? But if
all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not,
or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: And
thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down
on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a
truth.”
I Corinthians 14:29-33,
“Let the prophets speak two or three,
and let the
other judge.
If anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first
hold his peace. For ye may all prophesy one by one,
that all may learn,
and all may be comforted.
And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the
prophets.
For God is not the author of confusion,
but of peace,
as in all churches of the saints.”
I Corinthians 14:26
“How is it then, brethren?
When ye come together, everyone of you
hath a psalm,
hath a doctrine,
hath a tongue,
hath a revelation,
hath an interpretation.
Let all things be done unto edifying.”
I Corinthians 14:37-40
“If any man think himself to be a prophet,
or spiritual,
let him acknowledge
that the things that I write unto you are the
commandments of the Lord.
But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. Wherefore,
brethren, covet to prophesy,
and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all
things be done decently and in order.”
I Thessalonians 5:19-22 “Quench not
the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings.
Prove(test)all
things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all
appearance of evil.”
II Timothy 3:16 “All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and
is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in
righteousness: That the man of God
may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
II Peter 1:19-21 “We have also
a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well
that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place,
until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing
this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any
private interpretation. For the prophecy came
not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake
as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
II Peter 3:15-16 “And account that
the long suffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our
beloved Paul also according to the wisdom given unto
him hath written unto you; As also in all
his epistles, speaking in them of
these thing; in which are some things hard to
be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as
they do also the other scriptures, unto their
own destruction.”
I John 4:1-6 “Beloved, believe not every
spirit, but try the spirits whether
they are of God: because many false
prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby
know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the
flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not
that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is
that spirit of antichrist,
whereof ye have heard that it would come: and even now
already is it in the world. They are
of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world
heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that
is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of
truth, and the spirit of error.”
Revelation 1:3 “Blessed is he that readeth,
and they that hear the words of
this prophecy(Book

is the spirit of prophecy.”
Revelation 22:18-19 “For I testify
unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of
this book, if any man shall add unto
these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written
in this book: And if any man shall take away
from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his
part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the
things which are written in this book.”

Matthew
24:11
“And many false prophets
shall rise, and shall deceive many.”
Summary
- The Old Testament prophets had a separative
social style. They typically remained alone or in small prophetic
communes, socially separate from the larger Israelite community as
seen in the following passages:
II Kings 1:7f -“And he said unto
them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and
told you these words? And they answered him, He as an
hairy man, and girt
with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he
said, It is Elijah the Tishbite...”
II Kings 6:1-2
“And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha,
Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee
is too strait for us.
Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man
a beam, and let us make us a place there, where
we may dwell.
And he answered, Go ye...”
I Samuel
10:5-7 “After that thou shalt come to the hill of
God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come
to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt
meet a company of prophets coming down from the high
place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and
a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy.
And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee,
and thou shalt prophesy with them,
and shalt be turned into another man. And let it be, when
these signs are come unto thee,
that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with
thee.”
I Samuel
19:20-24 “And Saul sent messengers to take David: and
when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying,
and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit
of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and
they also prophesied. And when it was told Saul,
he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise.
And Saul sent messenger again the third time, and they
prophesied also...And Saul went
thither...and the Spirit of God was upon him also,
and he went on, and prophesied...And he
stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied
before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day
and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also
among the prophets?
In the New Testament, however, prophets
were fully integrated into the faith community. The New
Testament prophets were not social separatists.
Note for
example, that the New Testament prophets
traveled and ministered together as in Acts 11:27-30
“And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto
Antioch. And there stood up one of them
named Agabus, and signified by the
spirit that there should be great dearth
throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days
of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples,
every man according to his ability,
determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt
in Judaea: Which also they did,
and sent it to the elders by the
hands of Barnabas and Saul.”
Also, in Acts 13:1-4,
prophets and teachers ministered together: “Now there
were in the church that was at
Antioch certain prophets and teachers;
as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene,
and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and
Saul.”
Note also how the prophets and apostles
ministered together as seen in such passages as:
Luke 11:49-50
“Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them
prophets
and apostles,
and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
that the blood of all the prophets,
which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required
of this generation;”
I Corinthians 12:27-28
“Now ye are the body of Christ,
and members in particular.
And God hath set some in the church,
first apostles,
secondarily prophets,
thirdly teachers,
after that miracles,
then gifts of healings,
helps,
governments,
diversities of tongues.”
Ephesians 4:10-16
“He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above
all heavens, that he might fill all things. And
he gave some, apostles;
and some,
prophets;
and some evangelists;
and some, pastors and teachers;
For the perfecting
of the saints,
for the work of the ministry,
for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Till
we all come in the unity of the faith,
and of the knowledge of the Son of God,
unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the
stature of the fullness of Christ:
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and
carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of
men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to
deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in
all things, which is the head, even Christ:
From whom the whole body fitly joined together
and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to
the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh
increase of the body unto the edifying of
itself in love.”
Final Note:
When prophecies are revealed and they do not come to pass when told,
we should keep in mind that God does delay judgments so more people
can come to repentance. There could also be intercessors praying for
and standing in the gap before God in relations to spoken
prophecies.
There is a time for judging
and judgment, but one must also be careful not to judge something
before it's time according to I Corinthians 4:5
“Therefore judge nothing before the time,
until the Lord come,
who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will
make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then
shall every man have praise of God.”
And again, in
II Peter 3:9, “The
Lord is not slack concerning his promise,
as some men count slackness; but is long suffering
to us-ward,
not willing that any should
perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
See also the example in
scripture when God spoke judgment and destruction upon the city of
Nineveh, but spared it when Jonah called the city to repentance to
which the king and all the people responded by repenting with
sackcloth and ashes as recorded in Jonah 1:1-4:11.
