REVERENTIAL FEAR

DEFINITION

Hebrew:     arats =to fear, be afraid, terrified

yare = to fear with reverence and awe

                   yirah = God reverence, holy fear

                   pachad = dread, fear

                   gur = be afraid, fear, stand in awe

Greek:        phobos = to be put in fear exceedingly, alarm or fright, the

                                   wholesome dread of displeasing God

                   phobeo = to cause fear, terrify

                   phoberos = fearful, terrible

                   eulabeia = caution, reverence, dread, fear

                   eulabeomai = to be circumspect, to be apprehensive, reverence,

                                      moved with fear

OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES

Genesis 42:18 “And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live: for I fear (yare) God:”

Deuteronomy 10:12 “And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear (yare) the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all they heart and with all thy soul.”

Joshua 24:14 “Now therefore fear (yare) the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve the Lord.”

I Samuel 12:23-24 “Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way: Only fear (yara) the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.”

Isaiah 29:23 “But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear (arats) the God of Israel.”

Matthew 10:28 “And fear (phobeo) not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear (phobeo) him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Acts 2:43 “And fear (phobos) came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.”

Acts 5:5, 11 “And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear (phobos) came on all them that heard these things.  And great fear (phobos) came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these thing.”

Acts 9:31 “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear (phobos) of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied.”

 

Acts 10:1-2 “There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band call the Italian band, a devout man, and one that feared (phobeo) God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.”

Acts 10:35 “But in every nation he that feareth (phobeo) him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”

Acts 19:17 “And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear (phobos) fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.”

Romans 11:20 “Well; because of unbelief they (Israel) were broken off, and thou (Gentiles) standest by faith.  Be not highminded, but fear (phobeo) (God).”

II Corinthians 7:1 “Having therefore these promises (epaggelia = an announcement, for information, message, promise), dearly beloved, let us cleanse (katharizo = cleanse, clean, purge, purify) ourselves from all filthiness (molusmos = a stain, soil, defile immorality, filthiness) of the flesh (sarx = flesh, body, human nature, carnal) and spirit (pneuma = breath, air, breeze, spirit, life), perfecting (epiteleo = to fulfill further or completely, execute, accomplish, perform, finish, perfect) holiness (hagiosune = sacredness, holiness, pure, blameless, consecrated, saint) in the fear (phobos) of God (theos = deity, supreme Divinity, God).”

Philippians 2:12-13 “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed (hupakouo = listen attentively, to heed, hearken, obey), not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out (katergazomai = to work fully, accomplish, finish, work out, denotes intensity, be engaged in, ) your own salvation (soteria = rescue, safety, deliver, save, salvation, savior, from soter = a deliverer, that is Christ) with fear (fobos) and trembling (tromos = a trembling, fear).  For it is God (theos = deity, supreme Divinity, God) which worketh (energeo = to be active, efficient, effectual, fervent, be mighty in, work effectually in, powerful, often of completion) in you both (kai = both to, also) to will (thelo ethelo = to determine, to choose, prefer, desire) and to do (energeo = to be active, fervent, effectual, be mighty in, work effectually in, powerful, operative, labor) of his good pleasure (eudokia = satisfaction, delight, purpose, desire, good pleasure).”

Colossians 3:22 “Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eye service, as men pleasers; but in singlenesss of heart, fearing (phobeo) God.”

Hebrews 5:7 “Who is the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared (eulabeia).”

Hebrews 10:27 “But a certain fearful (phoberos) looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.”

Hebrews 10:31 “It is a fearful (phoberos) thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not see as yet, moved with fear (eulabeomai = circumspect, apprehensive, to reverence, moved with fear) , prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”

Hebrews 12:28-29 “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptable with reverence and godly fear (eulabeia): For our God is a consuming fire.”

I Peter 2:17 “Honor all men.  Love the brotherhood.  Fear (phobeo) God.  Honor the king.”
