SERVANT HEART

DEFINITION:

Hebrew –   servant       sharath = service, to minister

                                      ebed = servant, doer, tiller, slave

Greek -       servant       doulos= a slave, a servant

                                      diakonos = a minister

                                      diakoneo = to wait on, minister to

                                      diakonia = ministration, service

                                      huperetes = an under rower, underling

EXAMPLES:

Joseph –     Servant to Potiphar “Overseer in his house.” Genesis 39:1-6

Servant to the keeper of the prison “Charge of all prisoners” Genesis 39:20-23

Servant to Pharaoh “Over Pharaoh/s house and land of Egypt” Genesis 41:37-46

Jesus Example –   John 13:4-17 “Washing feet.”

Philippians 2:7-8 “He took upon Himself the form of a servant”.

Jesus Teachings

Matthew 20:27 “Whosoever will be chief let him be your servant.”

Matthew 23:11 “He that is greatest shall be your servant.”

John 12:26 “If any man serve me, let him follow me; where I am there shall my servant be.  If any man serve me, him will my Father honor.”

Disciple Examples -       Paul  “Ourselves, your servant for Jesus sake.” I Corinthians 4:5

                                      James “James, a servant of God.” James 1:1

Peter “Simon Peter, a servant.” II Peter 1:1

                                      Jude “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ.” Jude 1

DEFINITION:

Hebrew - broken           kathath = beaten down

                                      shabar = shattered

                                      abad = destroyed

                                      dahah = to be bruised  

Greek – broken             klaomai =to be broken

                                      suntribomai = to be wholly broken

                                      sunthlaomai = to be crushed together

EXAMPLES:

Old Testament

Psalms 31:12 “I am like a broken vessel.”

Psalms 34:18 “The Lord is nigh unto…a broken heart.”

Psalms 38:8 “I am sore broken.”            

Psalms 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit and a contrite heart thou wilt not despise.”

Isaiah 30:14 “The potter’s vessel that is broken in pieces.”

Jeremiah 23:9 “Mine heart within me is broken.”

New Testament

Matthew 21:44; Luke 20:18 “And whosever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.”

John 19:36 “For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.”

I Corinthians 11:24 “This is my body which is broken for you.”

 

DEFINITION:

Hebrew – humble, humility   anah = to afflict

 

Greek -   humble, humility     tapeinoo = to make low

                                                tapeinos = low, lowly       

EXAMPLES:

Old Testament

Deuteronomy 8:2 “God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.”

Micah 6:8 “Walk humbly with thy God.”

New Testament

Matthew 18:4 “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 23:12 “Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”

Philippians 2:8 “And being found in fashion as a man, He (Jesus) humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Colossians 3:12-13 “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

James 4:6 “But he giveth more grace, Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

I Peter 5:5 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder.  Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”

I Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:”
