RELATIONSHIPS: DAVID & ABSALOM
1.
II Samuel 3:2-3 “And unto David were sons born in Hebron: third
born, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;”
2.
II Samuel 13:1, 14 “And it came to pass after this, that
Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and
Amnon the son of David loved her. Being stronger than she, he forced her, and
lay with her.”
ABSALOM’S RESPONSE:
3.
II Samuel 13:28-29 “Absalom commanded his servants,
saying, smite Amnon(David’s first born-II Samuel 3:2) And the servants of
Absalom did unto Amnon as Absolom had commanded.”
ABSALOM’S RESPONSE:
4.
II Samuel 13:34, 37-38 “Absalom fled and went to Talmai,
the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur and was there three years.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
5.
II Samuel 13:37, 39 “David mourned for his son every day. And
the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was
comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
6.
II Samuel 14:21, 23 “And king David said unto Joab, Behold now,
I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom
again. So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to
Jerusalem.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
7.
II Samuel 14:24 “And King David said, Let him turn to his own
house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own
house, and saw not the king’s face.”
ABASOLM’S RESPONSE:
8.
II Samuel 14:28-31, “Absalom dwelt two full years in
Jerusalem, and sawnot the king’s face. Therefore Absalom sent for Joab,
to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent
again the second time, he would not come. Therefore he said unto his
servants, See, Joab’s field is near mine, and he hath barely there; go and set
it on fire. And Absalom’s servants set the field on fire. Then Joab
arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him,
Wherefore have thy servants set the fields on fire?”
ABSALOM’S RESPONSE:
9.
II Samuel 14:32 “Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent
unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say,
Wherefore am I come from Geshur? It had been good for me to have been there
still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity
in me, let him kill me.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
10.
II Samuel 14:33 “So Joab came to the king, and told him: and
when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself
on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.”
ABSALOM’S RESPONSE:
11.
II Samuel 15:4-6 “Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were
made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come
unto me, and I would do him justice! And it was so, that when any man came
night to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and
kissed him. And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to
the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of
Israel.”
ABSALOM’S RESPONSE:
12.
II Samuel 15:7, 10, 12 “And it came to pass after forty years,
that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow,
which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron. But Absalom sent spies
throughout all the tribes of Israel saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of
the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron. And the
conspiracy was strong: for the people increased continually with Absalom.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
13.
II Samuel 15:13-14 “And there came a messenger to David, saying,
the hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. And David said unto
all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for
we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he
overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge
of the sword.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
14.
II Samuel 15:25-26, 30, 32 “And King David said unto Zadok,
Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favor in the eyes of
the Lord, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:
But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do
to me as seemeth good unto him. And David went up by the ascent of mount
Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went
barefoot: And it came to pass, that David was come to the top of the mount,
where he worshipped God.”
ABSALOM’S RESPONSE:
15.
II Samuel 15:37 “Absalom came into Jerusalem.”
SHIMEI’S RESPONSE:
16.
II Samuel 16:5-8 “A man of the family of the house of Saul,
whose name was Shimei: he came forth and cursed still as he came. And he cast
stones at David. And thus saith Shimei: The Lord hath returned upon thee all
the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned: and the Lord
hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and,
behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
17.
II Samuel 16:9-12 “Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the
king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over, I pray
thee, and take off his head. And the king said, What have I to do with you,
ye sons of Zerulah? So let him curse, because the Lord hath said unto him,
Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so? And David said
to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my
bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? Let him
alone, and let him curse; for the Lord hath bidden him. It may be that the
Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for
his cursing this day.
HUSHAI’S RESPONSE:
18.
II Samuel 17:1-2, 4, 14 “Hushai said, Therefore I counsel that
all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the
sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own
person. And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of
Hushai of Archite is better.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
19.
II Samuel 18:5-7 “King David commanded Joab, Abishai and Ittai,
saying, deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.
So the people went into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the
wood of Ephraim; Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of
David and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.”
ABSALOM’S RESPONSE:
20.
II Samuel 18:9-10, 14-15, 19-20 “And Absalom met the
servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went
under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak,
and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was
under him went away.
JOAB’S RESPONSE:
21.
Joab took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. And ten young
men that bare Joab’s armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew
him. The Lord hath avenged king David of his enemies, the king’s son is
dead.”
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
22.
II Samuel 18:32-33 “And the king said, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all
that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. And the king
was much moved and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he
went thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom!
Would God I had died for thee. O Absalom, my son, my son!
DAVID’S RESPONSE:
23.
Psalm 3:1-8 (A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom
his son.)“Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that
rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for
him in God. Selah. But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the
lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me
out of his holy hill. Selah. I laid me down and slept; I awaked: for the
Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have
se themselves against me round about. Arise, O Lord’ save me, O my God: for
thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the
teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto thee Lord: Thy blessing is
upon thy people. Selah.”
