“PASTORS
and TEACHERS”
Ephesians 4:11
“And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;”
Literally “some to be pastors(to tend
as shepherds) and teachers”
1.
Smith Greek Studies: The absence of the Greek article before “teachers”
indicates that these were not two distinct orders, but designations of the
same men.
2.
Expositor’s Greek Testament: The Greek form of the expression might
seem to imply that the functions of “pastor and teacher” were united in the
same person.
3.
Vincent Word Studies in New Testament Greek: The omission of the
article from teachers seems to indicate that pastors and teachers are included
under one class. The two belong together.
4.
Robertson Greek Word Pictures in the New Testament: Here Paul groups
“shepherds and teachers” together.
5.
Wuest Word Studies in the Greek New Testament: The words “pastors and
teachers” are in a construction called Granvill Sharp’s rule which indicates
that they refer to one individual. The one who shepherds God’s flock is also
a teacher of the Word, having both the gifts of shepherding and teaching the
flock.
