HOLY
SPIRIT, THE PERSON
The Holy Spirit is a person
not an “it” as some translations make reference. The Greek word for Spirit is
pneuma and in the Greek language it is a neuter noun and thus the
translators were simply using the correct sentence structure. But this “it”
translation has caused some misunderstanding about the nature of the person of
the Holy Spirit.
Examples in Scripture that
use the neuter noun in reference to the Holy Spirit are as follows:
Romans 8:16, 26 - “The
Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of
God. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what
we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for
us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Ephesians 1:13-14
– “That Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until
the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
According to the following
passages, the Holy Spirit is called by the masculine noun, the Paraclete that
comes from the Greek word parakletos meaning one called along side:
John 14:16 – “I will
pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide
with you forever.”
John 15:26 - “But
when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even
the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of
me.”
John 16:7 –
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away:
for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I
will send him unto you.”

therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all thins
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the
end of the world. Amen.”
