EVANGELISM: By Answering Questions

 

I. I Peter 3:15

Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you for a reason of the hope that is within you.

  1. sanctify” – hagiazo to set apart

  2. the Lord God” – kurios Lord, master; theos God

  3. in your hearts” – kardia heart

  4. and be ready always” -- hetoimos ready; hekastote each time

  5. to give an answer” – apologia an apology

  6. to every man that asketh you” – pas all, everyone; aiteo to ask, crave

  7. for a reason of the hope” – logos a word; elpis hope

  8. that is within you” -- meta with, in common with; humas you

 

II. Colossians 4:5-6

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

  1. walk” – peripateo to walk around

  2. toward them that are without” – pros toward

  3. redeeming the time” - exagorazo to acquire out of the forum; karios a fixed time or season

  4. Let your speech be always” – logos word; pantote always

  5. with grace” – charis grace, graciousness

  6. seasoned with salt” – artuo to fit, prepare; halas salt

  7. that ye may know” – oida to see, have seen, known

  8. how ye ought to answer every man.” – dei it behoveth

 

III. Luke 21:12-15

But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake. And it shall turn to you for a testimony. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.”

 

IV. Example of Jesus

  1. Nicodemus - John 3:4 “How can a man be born when he is old?” John 3:9 “How can these things be?”

  2. Woman at the Well - John 4:11 “From whence then hast thou that living water?”

  3. Rich Young Ruler - Matthew 19:16 “Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” Matthew 19:20 “What lack I yet?”

  4. Saul of Tarsus – Acts 9:5 “Who art thou Lord?” Acts 9:6 “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”

 

V. Example of Disciples

  1. Peter at Pentecost – Acts 2:37 “What shall we do?”

  2. Phillip & Ethiopian Eunuch – Acts 8:31 “How can I understand what I am reading except some man should guide me?”

  3. Peter & Cornelius – Acts 10:33 “What has are all things that are commanded thee of God?”

  4. Paul & Silas and the Philippian Jailer – Acts 16:30 “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
