Luke
1:26-38, 46-56
v26:
“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city
of Galilee, named Nazareth,
v27:
“To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of
David; and the virgin’s(parthenos=virgin, one put aside)name was Mary(Hebrew=bitter).”
v28:
“And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail(chairo=to
rejoice, be of good cheer), thou that art highly(hupselos=exalted)
favored (charis=grace), the Lord is with(meta=in common with)
thee: blessed(eulogeo=to speak well of) art thou among women.”
v29:
“And when she saw him, she was troubled(diataratto=to trouble
thoroughly) at his saying, and cast in her mind(dialogizomai=to
reason out), what manner of salutation(aspasmos=a salutation,
embrace) this should be.”
v30:
“And the angel said unto her, Fear not(phobeo=to cause to fear,
terrify), Mary: for thou hast found favor(charis=grace) with
God.”
v31:
“And, behold, thou shalt conceive (sullamabano=to receive seed)
in thy womb(gaster=womb, belly), and bring forth a son, and shall call
his name Jesus(Hebrew=Savior).”
v32:
“He shall be great(megas=great), and shall be called the Son(hulos=son,
offspring) of the Highest(hupsistos=most high): and the Lord God
shall give unto him the throne of his father David:”
v33:
“And he shall reign(basileuo=to be king) over the house of Jacob
for ever; and of his kingdom(basileia=kingdom) there shall be no
end(telos=end).”
v34:
“Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not(ginosko=to
know) a man?”
v35:
“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come
upon thee(ephistemi=to place upon or over), and the power(dunamis=power)
of the Highest(hupsistos=most high) shall overshadow(episkiazo=to
overshadow) thee: therefore also that holy thing(hagion=separate or
set apart object) which shall be born(gennao=to beget, bring forth)
of thee shall be called the Son(huios=son, offspring).” of
God(theos=object of worship)
v36:
“And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her
old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.”
v37:
“For with God nothing(rhema=not any word) shall be impossible (aduna=to
be powerless, weak, impotent).”
v38:
“And Mary said, Behold(idou=see) the handmaid(doule=female
slave, servant) of the Lord(kurios=master)); be it unto me according(kata=according
to, by) to thy word(rhema=saying, speech). And the angel departed
from her.”
v46:
“And Mary said, My soul(psuche=animal soul: mind, will, emotion)
doth magnify(megaluno=to make great) the Lord(kurios=master),”
v47:
“And my spirit(pneuma=spirit) hath rejoiced(sugchairo=to
rejoice together with) in God(theos=object of worship) my Savior(solter=preserver).”
v48:
“For he hath regarded(epiblepo=to look upon) the low estate(tapeinosis=lowliness)
of his handmaiden(doule=female slave, servant): for, behold, from henceforth(nun=now)
all(pas=all, any, every) generations(genea=generation) shall
call me blessed(makarizo=to make or declare happy).”
v49:
“For he that is mighty(dunatos=able, powerful) hath done great
things(megaleia=the great thing); and holy(hagios=separate, set
apart) is His name(onoma=name).”
v50:
“And his mercy(eleos=kindness, beneficence) is on them that fear(phobeo=to
cause to fear, terrify) Him from generation to generation.”
v51:
“He hath shewed strength(poieo=to do, to make) with his arm(brachion=arm);
He hath scattered(diakorpizo=to scatter thoroughly) the proud(huperephanos=exceeding
proud) in the imagination(dianoia=mind, understanding) of their hearts(kardia=the
heart).”
v52:
“He hath put down(kathaireo=to take down) the mighty(dunastes=able,
powerful one) from their seats(thronos=throne), and exalted(hupsoo=to
raise up, elevate) them of low degree(tapeinos=humble).”
v53:
“He hath filled(empiplemi=to fill in, to make quite full) the hungry(peinao=to
hunger) with good things(agathon=good thing); and the rich(plouteo=to
be or become rich)he hath sent(exapostello=to send away out) empty(kenos=empty)
away.”
v54:
“He hath holpen(old English helped) his servant(pais=a child)
Israel, in remembrance(mnaomai=to remember) of His mercy(eleos=kindness,
beneficence).”
v55:
“As He spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.”
