MAKING DISCIPLES

Greek definition: mathetes = a learner, a pupil, one who follows the

                                             teachings of another taught or trained ones

                         mathano = to learn

                         matheteuo = to follow the precepts and instructions

                                             of another; to make a disciple, to teach,

                         paideia = to discipline; to train, to nurture

            gumnasia = discipline, training, exercise to instruct.

Note: “In the Greek, the word “disciple” does not carry with it the idea that the person who is named as a disciple is necessarily a saved person.  The word does not contain any implications of salvation.  A person may learn something from someone else and yet not put that knowledge in practice or make it a part of his life.  The context within the Scripture must rule as to whether the particular disciple mentioned, is saved or unsaved, not the word itself.” (Greek scholar, Kenneth S. Wuest)

  5. Luke 14:26-33; Matthew 10:37-39 “If any man come to me, and hate not(“loveth more”)his father and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple  And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple…build a tower…count the cost…king…consult…so likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
  6. Luke 9:57-62 “And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.  And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.  And he said unto another, Follow me,  But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.  And another said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bide them farewell, which are at home at my house.  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
