DISCIPLESHIP
Disciple:
manthano =
to learn, to be apprised of, to increase one’s
knowledge
mathetes
=
a learner, a pupil, one who follows the teaching of
someone else taught or trained one, one who puts
himself
under the teaching of someone else and
learns
from him
matheteuo =
to follow the precepts and instructions of another, to
make or be a disciple; to teach or instruct
summathetes = a fellow pupil
Note:
According
to the Greek, the word for “disciple” is not necessarily synonymous
with what is often refer to as a “saved” person.
A person can be a learner and not put that knowledge into practice
or make it a part of his life.
Thus the context must rule as to whether the particular disciple
mentioned, is “saved or unsaved”, not the word disciple itself.
Jesus
did not say to make “Christians” but rather to make “disciples!”
He did not say “repeat” but rather “repent!”
Nor did He teach to raise your hand, say a prayer, walk the aisle
or sign a card! The Biblical order was to make disciples(learners), lead them
to repentance, baptize them and teach them to obey!
- John 6:22-71 “Except
ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his *KEY VERSE blood, ye
have no life in you. Many
of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This
is a hard saying; who can hear it?
Jesus: There were some that
believe not. For Jesus
knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who
should betray him. No man
can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
From that time many of his disciples went back,
and walked no more with him. Then
said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we
go? Thou hast the word of
eternal life. And we
believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living
God. ”Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and
one of you is a devil? He
spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon:
for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.”
- Matthew 28:18-20
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All(pas=all, any
every)power(exousia=authority) is given unto me in heaven and
in earth. Go (poreuomai =going,
as you go, to go or pass on) ye therefore and teach(mathetes=to
be or make a disciple, teach) all(pas) nations(ethnos=nations),
baptizing(baptizo=to place
into, immerse)them in the name (onoma) of the Father (pater),
and of the Son(huios), and of the Holy Ghost (hagion
pneuma): Teaching (didasko=to
teach) them to observe(tereo=to watch, keep)all(pas)
things whatsoever I have commanded(entellomai=to give in
charge) you: and, lo, I
am with you alway (hemera=all the days), even unto the end(sunteleia=full
end) of the world(aion=age, indefinite time, dispensation).”
- Mark 16:15-16 “And Jesus said unto them, Go(poreuomai)
ye into all the world(kosmos), and preach(kerusso=to
cry, to proclaim as a herald) the gospel(euaggelion=good news,
tidings, word) to every creature(ktsis=a making, a thing made).
He that believeth(pisteuo=to adhere to, trust, rely on)
and is baptized(baptizo) shall be saved(sozo=to make or
keep sound or safe); but he that believeth not(pisteuo) shall
be damned(katakrino=to judge one down).”
- Luke 24:47-48 “And that repentance(metanoia=a
change of mind) and remission(aphesis=a sending away) of sins(hamartia=sin,
error) should be preached(kerusso) in his name(onoma)
among all nations(ethnos), beginning(archomai=to begin,
commence) at Jerusalem. And
ye are witnesses (martus =witness,
martyr) of these things.”
- John 20:21 “As the Father hath sent(apostello=to
send away) me, even so send(pempo=to send) I you.”
